The American Cancer Society is working to finish the fight against
every cancer in every community. Your donations help us do the most for
people with cancer today and work tirelessly to find cures to end the
This year's mission moment will be a specially created Health Equity Fund for Lee and Collier Counties.
Social determinants affect access to health care. So much of what the American Cancer Society strives to do is to help reduce the disparities and increase equity in the cancer space across the continuum from detection to diagnosis to treatment and hopefully to survivorship. These barriers can include limited access to early screening and detection. COVID-19 impact on screenings has caused a delay in screenings and an increase in later-stage diagnoses. At a later stage, cancer is more difficult to treat and more costly. Nearly 20+million cancer screenings were missed during COVID. Access to treatment is also a factor. Some patients are unable to get timely, lifesaving treatment because they lack access to reliable transportation to get to a treatment center or have no place to stay once getting there.
ACS Programs focused on impacting health equity in these two counties would benefit from the newly created Lee Collier Health Equity Fund and can include but not be limited to transportation and lodging grants as well as increased screening efforts with health systems and federally qualified health centers serving large numbers of under-resourced Lee and Collier residents.
For more than 100 years, The American Cancer Society has been leading the fight to end cancer. With your support, we have helped usher in an era where more people survive cancer than ever before. By translating our research findings into action, we’ve seen a 29% decline in US cancer death rates since 1991.
